I am very tired tonight for some reason, I don’t know why since I did get some sleep today. It may be because I took three Advil PM’s and a Melatonin this morning. That will teach me.

Not a lot went on today, I went to the Commissary to pick up a few things for dinner and then went home and hit the hay. I don’t think the dogs even came into the room, although I did have 3 cats in bed with me once or twice.

DEEP IN DEBT

The Treasury Department says the federal deficit swelled to $263.3 billion in the first five months of this budget year as record spending during the period outpaced record revenues.

The department’s latest snapshot of the government’s balance sheets, released Wednesday, shows that the deficit for the budget year that began Oct. 1 was up a whopping 62 percent from the red ink of $162.2 billion for the corresponding five-month period last year.

The latest year-to-date budget deficit of $263.3 billion was an all-time high, the government said.

Spending totaled a record $1.23 trillion, while revenues totaled $967.2 billion, also an all-time high.

For the month of February alone, the government ran a deficit of $175.6 billion, a record for any single month.

GAS AND OIL AT RECORD HIGHS – MY WALLET AT RECORD LOWS

Gasoline and oil prices extended their record-setting streaks Wednesday, with gas at the pump reaching a new high of nearly $3.25 and crude surpassing $110 for the first time.

The gains came as a weakening dollar led investors to shrug off an Energy Department report that crude oil and gasoline supplies jumped last week.

The national average price of a gallon of regular gas rose by 1.9 cents overnight to $3.246 a gallon, a new record, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service. Pump prices are following crude’s recent surge, and could rise as high as $3.75 a gallon this spring, analysts say.

NEW FIVERS

Coming soon to a cash register near you: a new $5 bill sporting some touches of color for the first time.

The bill goes into circulation Thursday. That’s when the Federal Reserve, the supplier of the nation’s cash, starts shipping the bills to banks, which send them to businesses and eventually into the wallets, pocketbooks and hands of people in this country and beyond.

The old $5 bills will continue to be accepted and recirculated until they wear out.

The makeover of the $5 bill is similar to changes to $10, $20 and $50 bills.

Next up for a new look: the $100 bill.
